Over 10 km away from Sa Pa to the northeast in Ta Fin commune, Where is well-known of charming Sapa tourists sites and its specific holy significance. Luyen tam monastery was half built from 1942 to 1944. Up till now, it remains a grandiose architectural work within high mountains. This place worships the founder of Ta Fin land where the local people used to organize commemorative rituals and community rally oath-taking ceremonies in Spring. Or the brocade co-operative with skilled weaving techniques of Mong and Dao minorities specializes in making famous brocade products which are sold domestically and internationally. Moreover, the brocade weaving craft helps to arouse curiosity and discovery desire of all travelers.

It will be a big mistake if you forget not to visit Ta Fin cave. The rocky bendy road will lead you to the miraculous Ta Fin cave which has a lot of stalactites of different shapes inside such as shapes of fairies in different postures of dancing, bathing, seating and carrying child in their arms, a shape of giant steamed glutinous rice tray with ivory unsmooth mineral pieces like coral, or ivory smooth columns falling down from the top and knitting each other as sapphire sparkling antennas. Drop of water run from mountain peak absorb and stagnate on the top of stalactites, then drip and drum melodiously in vaporous space… Ta Fin is now defined as one of the tourist main points of Sa Pa and comprehensively investing with the aim of bringing about more new things to travelers.

Fansipan or Fan Si Pan (Phan Xi P?ng in Vietnamese ) is a mountain in Vietnam, the highest in Indochina, at 3 143 m. It is located in the Lao Cai province in Northwest Vietnam, 9 km southwest of Sa Pa Township in the Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range. Fansipan is dubbed “the Roof of Indochina”;

The topography of Fansipan is varied. Muong Hoa Valley, at the lowest altitude (950 to 1 000m), is created by a narrow strip of land at the base on the east side of the mountain. It can be climbed in a steep and fairly strenuous hiking tours.

Starting from Sa Pa Town in Sa Pa District, Lao Cai Province and going northwards for 15km in the direction of Bac Waterfall, you will arrive at the entrance of Tram Ton forest, which lies 1,700m above sea level. Start the trek to conquer the Fansipan Mountain. After going along a stream, you will be faced a steep slope – the beginning of a difficult adventure. Fortunately, in the forests there are neither terrestrial leeches nor mosquitoes, which are abundant in low laying forests. After one hour of trekking under a low tree canopy then to enter a jungle of tall trees, so big that it took several people joining hands to completely embrace just one. It is a tropical primeval forest with two specific layers of age-old and low trees.

The higher the area, the more diverse the ecological system was. There are nearly 3,000 species of trees and plants belonging to many families, including more than 2,000 species of high-grade plants belonging to 771 orders of 200 families, accounting for 20% of Vietnam’s flora. There are also 337 high-grade plants accounting for 44% of the species listed in Vietnam’s Red Book and 16 species of them have been listed in the world’s Red Book. Of these species, 50% are medicinal plants, timbers, ornamental plants, food crops, latex- and attar-bearing plants.

Hoang Lien National Park has 832 species of wildlife including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Due to its ecological diversity, Hoang Lien National Park has been recognised as an ASEAN Heritage Garden.

At the altitude of 2,200m and you will stop over at the Park’s Management Board and enjoy with the beautiful scene. The sky is cloudless and there will be beautiful Di thao flowers with its faint perfume pervading the air. After lunch, you will get on the trek again.

Night fell quickly and it become cooler. The difference in temperature on the mountain is great within a year, from 320C at maximum to 70C at minimum.

Early in the morning and full of excitement as you will look forward to continuing the four-hour trek to the summit. At last, you will set foot on the summit of Fansipan, the roof of Indochina after a day of climbing the Fansipan mountain and a night of sleeping in the forest. While enjoying the scenery of blue sky and cloud above and ranges of mountains and forests below, you will be felt extremely happy and enjoyed for what you have done in couple days.

Via Muong Tien to get to Sapa, in vaporous clouds travelers will see a mountain peak rising as dragon-head. It is Ham Rong mountain with 100 ha in area. The name of Ham Rong was derived from the legend that, in primitive age there were a couple of dragons which became attached to each other while the deluge was rising high. Walking up, they hurrily separated from each other but failed. They were drifted to different places. After a long time, the female dragon was petrified but still tried to raise its eyes to the male dragon on the Hoang Lien mountain in the west because its instinct for survival remained.

As going to Sa Pa, travelers often climb up Ham Rong mountain to enjoy a cool atmosphere and charming landscapes such as cloud ground and stone garden, gardens, garden of medicinal plants, especially the garden of various orchids and specific houses on stilts of ethnic minorities. A great deal of rocks in shape of dragon claws and fin appear to our eyes and we will think of being lost in a wonderland. Following cliff will lead us to the heaven gate I and II. Standing on the peak, you will enjoy particularly interesting landscapes around as much as you wish and throw your view farer to make the most of poetic beauty of Sapa town looming in clouds.

Fansipan is branded “the Roof of Indochina” at the height of 3,143m; Fansipan is to be approved as one of the very few eco-tourist spots of Vietnam, with about 2,024 floral varieties and 327 faunal species.

The topography of Fansipan is varied. Muong Hoa Valley, at the lowest altitude (950-1,000m), is created by a narrow strip of land at the base on the east side of the mountain.

Geologists say the Hoang Lien Mountain Range, with Fansipan as its highest peak, did not emerge in the mountainous North West of Vietnam until the neozoic period (circ. 100 million years ago). Fansipan, a rough pronunciation of the local name “Hua Xi Pan” means “the tottery giant rock”. The French came to Vietnam and in 1905 planted a landmark telling Fansipan’s height of 3,143m and branded it “the Roof of Indochina”. Very few people climbed to the top of Fansipan at the time. Then came the long years of war and Fansipan was left deserted for hunting and savaging. The trail blazed by the French was quickly overgrown by the underbrush.

It takes six or seven days to reach the 3,143m summit, the highest peak of the Indochina Peninsula.

In 1991, Nguyen Thien Hung, an army man returned to the district town and decided to conquer Fansipan. Only on the 13th attempt did Hung, with a H’Mong boy as his guide, conquer the high peak by following the foot steps of the mountain goats. Scaling the height was meant to satisfy his eager will and aspiration to conquer the mountain without expecting that his name would be put down in the travel guidebook. After that the Sapa Tourism Agency started a new package tour there. It seemed the Fansipan Tour was meant only for those who wished to test their muscular power.

The summit of Fansipan is accessible all year round, but the best time to make the ascent is from mid-October to mid-November, and again in March.

Foreigners like best to book Fansipan tours between October and December, as this period is more often than not free from the heavy rains that obstruct the jaunt. But the Vietnamese prefer their tours to the peak of the mountain from February to April, as it is not so cold then. However, the best time for the trek to the mountain is from the end of February to the start of March, when the flowers all flourish and the climbers may behold the carpets of brilliant blossoms, violets and orchids, rhododendrons and aglaias.
